Students in the College enjoy the freedom to chart their own individual course toward graduation. In addition to the guidance they receive from faculty and administrators, students also benefit from informed support from parents and family members. Therefore, the College strives to assist you, as a family member, in finding out what resources and opportunities are available, to help your student make informed academic choices and decisions.
The Family Resource Guide and the Hurricane Family Connection Newsletter are published periodically during each academic year with information about policies and procedures, new initiatives, highlights of campus resources, and upcoming dates and deadlines for students. Parents are also welcome to read the weekly online publication of University of Miami news found in University of Miami news website.
Student Records and FERPA
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of educational records. FERPA considers college students (unlike high school students) to be independent and, therefore, information about them, save for basic “directory” information, may not be released to parents or guardians unless the student consents to disclosure, or other exceptions to FERPA apply.
